What it is

Laser hair reduction uses a long-pulse Nd:YAG laser, a wavelength that is generally better tolerated by darker skin types than some alternatives. It can be used on the face and on body areas.

How it works

Laser energy is absorbed by pigment in the hair and converted to heat, which damages the follicle. Because only hairs in the active growth phase respond, and not all hairs are in that phase at once, a course of sessions spaced weeks apart is necessary.

Reduction, not removal

The accurate term is reduction. Most people see fewer, finer and slower-growing hairs rather than permanent total removal, and maintenance sessions are often needed. Light, grey or very fine hair contains little pigment and responds poorly regardless of the number of sessions.

Before your session

Avoid plucking or waxing between sessions, since the follicle needs to be present for the laser to work. Shaving is fine. Avoid sun exposure and tanning before and after treatment.

Safety information

All medical procedures carry risk. The points below are general and are not a substitute for an individual assessment.

Possible side effects

Redness, swelling around follicles, and temporary discomfort. Less commonly, blistering, burns, temporary pigmentation change, or paradoxical hair growth.

May not be suitable if

Pregnancy, active infection in the treatment area, recent sun exposure or tanning, photosensitising medication, recent isotretinoin use, or a history of keloid scarring. Light or grey hair responds poorly.
