What it is

Er:YAG laser removes small benign surface lesions precisely, with limited heat spread to the surrounding skin. It is used for skin tags, milia (sometimes called oil seeds), seborrhoeic keratoses and similar lesions.

Assessment before removal

Any lesion is examined before it is treated. Where the diagnosis is not clear, or where features raise concern about skin cancer, the lesion is not lasered — you will be referred for proper assessment and, if needed, biopsy. Removing an undiagnosed lesion with a laser destroys the tissue that would be needed to make that diagnosis.

What to expect

  • Local anaesthetic where appropriate
  • A small crust at each treated point, healing over five to ten days
  • Temporary pink or pale marks as the skin settles
  • Sun protection while healing to reduce pigmentation change

Safety information

All medical procedures carry risk. The points below are general and are not a substitute for an individual assessment.

Possible side effects

Small crusts, temporary redness and lightening or darkening at the treated site. Less commonly, scarring, infection, or recurrence of the lesion.

May not be suitable if

Pregnancy, active infection at the treatment site, keloid tendency, recent isotretinoin use, or any lesion where the diagnosis is uncertain or malignancy is suspected.
